At a time when many athletes aren’t able to make an impact on the field due to the coronavirus epidemic, they’re finding a way to make contributions off it.
Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward is pledging $200,000 to help Chicago in its efforts to fight COVID-19. The donation will be split up with $100,000 going to MASK, which provides supplies and meals to families impacted by the virus, and an additional $100,000 being donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
Heyward’s incredible gesture comes at a time when many athletes and teams are coming together to help their communities. Atlanta Braves star Freddie Freeman pledged $125,000 to Atlanta-based charities and all 30 MLB teams are providing $1 million each to support their stadium employees while the season is suspended.
During such a difficult time for the global community and with the coronavirus spreading in the United States, it’s wonderful to see so many people stepping up to help others.
