The man that many believe is the top candidate for the New York Mets manager opening reportedly is very interested in talking about the opportunity when his contract expires at the end of the month.
The New York Mets head into the offseason needing to make some major adjustments to their organization. Obviously, they need to improve the roster after a massively disappointing showing this season and being sellers at the trade deadline. However, they have a couple of huge holes to fill in their management structure.
While the organization finally has a new President of Baseball Operations in David Stearns, they no longer have a general manager — after Billy Eppler resigned amid an MLB investigation — and Buck Showalter stepped down from his role as the team’s skipper.
At this point, all indications are that Stearns is in no rush to find a new GM, however, the organization must find a new manager. Especially before MLB free agency ramps up next month. The Mets job is one that many coaches would be interested in, but one name continues to be linked to it. That being Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell.

Since Stearns held the same job with Milwaukee, there is a belief he would try to entice Counsell to New York with his contract set to expire following nine productive seasons with the Brewers. Yet, it is unclear if the Indiana native would be interested in the job if he did not re-sign with his current employer. Well, a new report suggests the 53-year-old actually would be very open to the idea.
On Tuesday, SNY’s Mets insider Andy Martino reported that “word is [Counsell] would in fact welcome the challenge of coming to New York if he and the Mets proved to be a fit.”
The Mets have not asked to speak to Counsell before his contract expires and the Brewers may be unlikely to help Stearns bring Counsell to Queens next season.
