Cowboys’ Jason Witten not interested in Tennessee head coach vacancy

Jason Witten

A rumor circulated earlier on Monday that Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten was interested in becoming the next head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers.

It was always seemingly a silly idea. Witten, who is still among the best pass-catching tight ends in the NFL, has absolutely no coaching experience.

The only thing linking the 35-year-old future Hall of Famer to the Volunteers is that he starred in Tennessee during a great college career. Outside of that, none of this ever really made much sense.

In talking about the possibility of becoming the Vols’ next head coach, Witten flatly denied the rumors.

Well, we can now put this silly rumor to rest.

The 10-time Pro Bowler is planning on playing in Dallas beyond the 2017 season. So Tennessee will have to look elsewhere to find a replacement for the fired Butch Jones.

Tennessee currently finds itself in the news for all the wrong reasons. The program backed out of a deal with Greg Schiano to become its new head coach after a public backlash. This has led to some very powerful figures in Knoxville calling for AD John Currie to be fired.

Meanwhile, former Vols quarterback Tee Martin has emerged as a possible head coaching candidate. Currently the USC offensive coordinator, Martin definitely makes sense as someone who might be able to turn this sinking ship around.
