It’s looking more and more like the Dallas Cowboys will place the dreaded franchise tag on quarterback Dak Prescott ahead of the start of free agency.

Things have not been going swimmingly when it comes to long-term contract talks between the two sides.

In fact, Cowboys VP Stephen Jones noted on Monday that they have not even discussed a long-term deal since prior to the start of the 2019 season in September.

This complicates a whole lot. First off, it’s not yet known whether teams will even be able to place the franchise tag on players this offseason. That’s dependent on the new collective bargaining agreement and when its signed.

Jones noted that no new deal will be signed with Prescott or fellow impending free agent, wide receiver Amari Cooper, until the new CBA is signed.

Prescott has shown outward frustration over not receiving a new deal in recent weeks. He’s coming off a career-best performance that saw the former mid-round pick put up north of 4,900 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

While there have been some rumors suggesting that Dallas could look in another direction and trade Prescott, the Cowboys’ noted on Monday that this possibility is not in the cards.

“Dak’s our quarterback,” Jones said.

This promises to get more interesting before things are decided between Prescott and the Cowboys. That’s for sure.
