Could the Timberwolves trade Karl-Anthony Towns this summer?

Karl-Anthony Towns is among the most-skilled big men in the entire NBA. Still just 22 years old, the 7-foot center is coming off a 2017-18 campaign that saw him average 21.3 points and 12.3 rebounds while shooting at a 55 percent mark from the field.

Towns is considered the face of an up-and-coming Wolves franchise. Or is he? According to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, there’s a chance something crazy could happen in Minnesota this coming summer.

“Darren Wolfson (veteran reporter in Minnesota) alluded to a lot of it on a podcast a couple weeks ago,” Lowe noted on his podcast. “I said on a podcast recently that I just have a gut feeling something crazy is gonna happen there this summer. It’s not in a good place right now internally.”

We can read between the lines there, but the conversation was surrounding Towns. After Lowe made his comments, ESPN colleague Brian Windhorst indicated that if he were the Celtics, he’d “make a quiet call to Minnesota.”

This is all sorts of crazy. Towns is seen as one of the most-talented players in the game. Minnesota just signed a one-dimensional Andrew Wiggins to a max contract extension. No matter who the Wolves might acquire in a trade for Towns, it certainly would not make the team any better.
