The Connecticut Sun handed the New York Liberty their third straight loss with an 85-64 thrashing on Saturday night.
Connecticut’s second consecutive victory improved its record to 8-2 and created some distance from the Liberty (5-4) in the WNBA standings.
Reigning Eastern Conference Player of the Month Jonquel Jones scored a season-high 31 points on 75 percent shooting adding 13 rebounds and three assists. In her past five games, Jones has averaged 24.8 points on 58% shooting recording three double-doubles.
Brionna Jones finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals while DeWanna Bonner scored 13 points.
Rebecca Allen came off the bench for the Liberty scoring 14 points with four of her five shots from the field coming from 3-point range. She was the only player to score in double figures for the Liberty.
Betnijah Laney scored just eight points on 33% shooting ending her streak of eight straight 20-point games to start the season.
For the third straight game, Sabrina Ionescu failed to score in double digits scoring just five points. Unlike her previous two games that saw her shoot low percentages with 10-plus attempts, this game she was not as offensively aggressive attempting just six shots from the field.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair throughout with both teams responding well when a run was made. The Sun held the largest lead in the first half going up eight points in the second quarter and would end it up 43-37.
The Sun started off the third quarter on a 9-0 scoring run to push their lead to 15 points and would hold the double-digit lead for the remainder of the game cruising to victory. Jonquel Jones had a huge second half, scoring 19 points to pace the Sun.
