Before the Andrew Luck retirement news shattered the sports world Saturday, the Indianapolis Colts were considered a top contender to win the Super Bowl. Now that Luck has announced he is stepping away from the game, the Colts’ Super Bowl odds have taken a significant plunge.
The oddsmakers at www.SportsBetting.ag released updated information that shows just how much Luck meant to the Colts’ championship aspirations:
- Colts Super Bowl odds fell from 16-1 to 50-1
- Colts conference title odds fell from 8-1 to 25-1
- Colts AFC South title odds fell from 1-1 to 9-2
- Colts’ odds to make playoffs at all fell from 1-2 to 4-1
- Colts’ season over/under win total fell from 9.5 to 6.5
With Luck out of the picture, Indianapolis will now be led on offense by veteran backup Jacoby Brissett. He has started 17 games in the past, including 15 games during Luck’s lost 2017 campaign.
Though Brissett only won four of his starts that season, it’s worth noting that the Colts were much worse off up front on the offensive line. Since then, Indy has shored up that unit and is much better equipped to protect the quarterback.
The former third-round pick out of North Carolina State has shown the ability to play at a high level. However, the bar of expectations has been raised to another level this year.
Aside from the question mark that is Brissett under center, the Colts have an impressive overall roster that is highlighted by a darn good defense. If Brissett can play well, then the Colts certainly can surprise with a playoff berth, and potentially even the AFC South crown.
That said, the team’s 50-1 Super Bowl odds makes sense. It would truly be stunning if this team makes it to the pinnacle following Luck’s shocking retirement.
