Colts’ Robert Mathis retiring after season finale

Robert Mathis

The Indianapolis Colts will say goodbye to pass rusher Robert Mathis after they play their final game of the 2016 season Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Heading into Sunday’s game, Mathis, who has more sacks than anyone in team history is one-half sack behind fellow Colts legend Dwight Freeney on the all-time sack list.

Originally selected in the fifth round out of Alabama A&M, Mathis has been with the Colts since 2003, his rookie year. He led the NFL in 2013 with 19.5 sacks and will finish his career having eclipsed double-digit sack totals five times.

Mathis has been selected to five Pro Bowls and is a one-time First-Team All Pro (2013). Sunday’s game against Jacksonville will mark the 192nd time Mathis has stepped onto an NFL field as a competitor. He’ll be missed, and the Colts will have a tall task replacing him in the future.
