The Indianapolis Colts’ decision to sign eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback Philip Rivers earlier in March was not a surprise. They had been linked to the future Hall of Fame signal caller at a near never-ending loop since the end of the 2019 season.
Up until this point, we had no idea how incumbent starter Jacoby Brissett took the signing. Colts head coach Frank Reich admitted on Tuesday that he called Brissett after they signed Rivers. The quarterback was not too happy about the move.
To be fair to Brissett, he was thrust into the starting role after Andrew Luck abruptly retired immediately ahead of the start of the regular season.
Brissett performed well initially, completing 64% of his passes for 1,649 yards with 14 touchdowns and three interceptions before suffering a knee injury during an early-November game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He responded by throwing four touchdowns in his final seven starts of the campaign.
Indianapolis certainly wants to make sure there’s no hard feelings here. Brissett signed a two-year, $30 million extension ahead of the 2019 season. He’s set to count $21.38 million against the cap in 2020. That’s not a tradable contract at this point in the spring.
