While the actual College World Series in Omaha doesn’t kick off until Friday, June 12, the tournament has already delivered enough chaos to last a lifetime. With the Super Regionals wrapping up today, June 8, the 64-team field has been whittled down to the final eight: West Virginia (16), Troy, UNC (5), Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Alabama (7), Texas (6) and Georgia (3).
Here are the key takeaways of the 2026 NCAA D1 Baseball Championship so far.

The Fall of the Giants
The biggest storyline heading into Omaha isn’t just who is there, but who isn’t. Seven of the top-16 national seeds were sent packing during the Regional round, including an unprecedented collapse by the top two overall seeds in the country.
- UCLA (1): and top prospect Roch Cholowsky were stunned on their home turf, losing twice to Saint Mary’s in the Los Angeles Regional.
- Georgia Tech (2) met a similar fate, after Oklahoma bounced them in extras in the Atlanta Regional.
This power vacuum has created one of the most wide-open College World Series fields in recent memory

The Standout Teams Headed to Omaha
While the heavy favorites crumbled, several programs have made massive statements on their way to Charles Schwab Field:
- The Troy Trojans: After taking down the No. 1 seed Florida in the Gainesville Regional, Troy proved they were no fluke. They swept Little Rock in their Super Regional matchup, outscoring them 19-4. They are rolling into Omaha with massive momentum and a wonderful Cinderella story narrative.
- West Virginia (16): The Mountaineers are peaking at the exact right moment. In their Morgantown Super Regional, they absolutely dismantled Cal Poly (the team that advanced out of UCLA’s region). West Virginia put up 29 runs in two games, winning 12-2 and 17-1 and looking utterly terrifying.
- Georgia (3): The Bulldogs survived an absolute slugfest in the Athens Super Regional against Mississippi State (14). After winning game one 13-12 where both teams combined for 11 homeruns, they clinched their ticket to Omaha with a gritty 11-9 victory in 10 innings.

What’s Next?
The stage is set for Friday. West Virginia will face Troy in what promises to be a fascinating clash of styles between an unstoppable offensive juggernaut and a fearless Cinderella riding peak momentum. Meanwhile, North Carolina (5) draws Ole Miss. With heavyweights like Texas also advancing to Omaha, the 2026 CWS is shaping up to be entirely unpredictable.
