It will be the first year of the 12-team College Football Playoff. The best way to pick a champion and cut down on all of the arguing!

Alas, it won’t cut down on the arguing. And that has already started. Who will be No. 1 when the season starts? That team gets a jump start on everyone else.

Well, there are always opinions. We have the Sportsnaut Top 25, which has already been updated several times since it came out after the College Football Championship game. Every outlet has a poll and everyone is looking at what happened last season, during recruiting and during the transfer portal period.

Paul Finebaum, an ESPN college football insider, was on a podcast last week, hosted by a longtime Ohio State beat writer Tim May to give his opinion.

Maybe Finebaum was playing to the audience, but he said Ohio State was his pick.

“I don’t think it takes any imagination to say that Ohio State should be the preseason No. 1,” Finebaum said on the show. “I know everybody looks for someone. That’s mine.

Shockingly, Finebaum didn’t put Alabama in his Top 5. As a man who has covered the Crimson Tide for years as a columnist in Birmingham, that was pretty big news.
