A 26-year-old grandson of legendary former Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski faces a misdemeanor driving while impaired charge after a Saturday night collision in Durham, North Carolina, that claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy.
The incident occurred just before 9 p.m., when Joseph Savarino, driving a Ford Explorer northbound, struck the teenager who was riding an e-bike in the same direction. The boy, identified by the family as Jack O’Shea, was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other injuries were reported, and police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

Details Emerge: Coach K Grandson’s DWI Crash Claims Life of Cardinal Gibbons Freshman
Savarino admitted to drinking earlier in the evening, according to court records. A breathalyzer test administered shortly after midnight registered a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.11 percent — exceeding North Carolina’s legal limit of 0.08 percent.
He was charged with DWI over the weekend and made his first court appearance Monday, where a judge revoked his driver’s license and set bond at $100,000. Savarino posted bail later that day and is now out of custody while awaiting his next court date. That’ll be in approximately one month.
O’Shea’s family shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, describing the Cardinal Gibbons High School freshman as a “perfect, smart, athletic, fearless, and handsome baby boy” who had enjoyed what would be his final day — attending confession in the morning and riding bikes with friends in the afternoon.
His mother noted the family was finding some comfort in memories of that day while grappling with unimaginable grief. The tragedy has shaken the local community, where O’Shea was known as a talented athlete on his school’s baseball and basketball teams.
The case has drawn attention due to Savarino’s prominent family ties to the Duke basketball program. Coach K, who led the Blue Devils to five national championships over several decades, has not issued a public statement on the matter as of Monday.
This marks the second time a grandson in the family has faced DWI-related issues in recent years.
