Closer Craig Kimbrel leaves Red Sox for infant daughter’s heart surgery

David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports

Craig Kimbrel will be away from the Red Sox during a part of spring training to deal with something much more serious than baseball. His infant daughter is having a second procedure done on her heart.

The Kimbrel’s daughter, Lydia, was born in November. Before Lydia’s birth, Kimbrel and his wife knew that their daughter would have heart issues.

Despite dealing with that knowledge for much of the season, Kimbrel found a way to work through that in 2017. He made his sixth All-Star team and finishing sixth in American League Cy Young voting.

Certainly, we can all hope that his daughter’s surgery goes well and that Kimbrel will be back on the mound sooner rather than later.
