As it was finishing up its practice on Tuesday, the Clemson football team dealt with something unusual and far more important than anything on the field.

“As the Tigers were finishing up workouts, a Clemson student had a car wreck near the practice field at approximately 6:20 p.m.,” Matt Connolly of The State reported. “Clemson student athletic trainers, managers and staff provided aid to the student, whose name is Clary Miles, Clemson announced Wednesday afternoon.

As Connolly noted, following a collision, Miles’ car slid roughly 100 feet down a hill, finally “coming to rest about 20 feet from the Seneca River that surrounds the Clemson football practice fields.”

“Sports Medicine Assistant Scott Crowthers, student athletic trainer Bailey Black, student managers Jack Wardlaw and Jack Sari, student coach Daniel Boyd and student videographer Eric Suttles, all swam across the river to reach Miles. Boyd and Suttles are military veterans,” Connolly stated. “Graduate assistant athletic trainer Rachel Alterio and student athletic trainer Ana Wright also went to the scene to provide help in removing Miles from the car and onto land. The students stayed with Miles until EMS personnel arrived.”

From the sound of things, it doesn’t seem as though there was much panic, which would have been understandable. Certainly, those people deserve ample credit for not only acting, but acting fast. We don’t know what would have happened had those people not acted so promptly and thankfully, we don’t have to find out.
