Report: Bettors likely to file class action lawsuit against NFL over non-call

The NFL’s failure to call a penalty on Nickell Robey-Coleman with under two minutes remaining in the NFC Championship Game had wide-ranging ramifications.

In addition to the fact that the non-call heard ’round the world cost the New Orleans Saints the game, many folks who bet on the game lost big money. And according to Darren Rovell of The Action Network, a class action lawsuit is almost certainly on the horizon.

On Twitter Monday, Rovell wrote: “Fully expect a class action lawsuit to be filed against the NFL in the next 24 hours as a result of people claiming losses from bad call in Rams-Saints game. Don’t know how convincing the claims will be, but have no doubt they will be made.”

It makes sense. Millions upon millions of dollars were won and lost based on a massive mistake.

At least one company is doing the right thing, refunding wagers on the Saints spreads and money lines due to the non-call, per Rovell.

This entire scenario makes one wonder about how the NFL intends to fix this going forward. With the legalization of gambling becoming more widespread (and likely nationally legal sooner, rather than later), the financial impact is significant.

Heck, as noted by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell actually has the power to change the outcome right now.

It’s going to be fascinating to see what happens next.
