Chiefs to sign All-Pro Tyrann Mathieu to $42 million deal

The Kansas City Chiefs headed into free agency with an obvious need at safety. It’s one of the reasons why the team decided to part ways with Pro Bowl pass rusher Justin Houston.

It now looks like the Chiefs have gotten their man. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kansas City will sign former All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu to a three-year, $42 million contract.

It was noted earlier on Monday that Mathieu preferred to return to the Houston Texans. But they were said to be offering him less than $10 million per season.

The former Arizona Cardinals third-round pick now gets the pay day that he was hoping for after Arizona released him last offseason.

Mathieu, 26, recorded 89 tackles, eight passes defended and two interceptions for the Texans last season. His best performance came back in 2015 when he tallied 89 tackles, 17 passes defended and five picks.
