Chiefs, Chargers take significantly different approach preparing for Mexico City elevation

Estadio Azteca in Mexico City presents a significant challenge for the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers. At an altitude of 7,200 feet, it’s a significant bump up even from playing at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.

Interestingly, the approaches taken by the Chiefs and Chargers could not be more different as they prepare for this significant altitude. Michele Steele of ESPN shared that the Chargers prepared for this Monday night matchup by practicing in Denver all week, while the Chiefs stayed home, prioritizing extra rest, hydration and specifically avoiding altitude.

This Monday Night Football matchup is significant for both teams. The Chiefs are currently tied atop the AFC West with Oakland, entering Week 11 with a record of 6-4. At 4-6, the Chargers are still very much in the division.

With that in mind, it’s going to be fascinating to see how Monday night’s game unfolds. Which team will fade down the stretch as the altitude of Mexico City deprives bodies of oxygen, and which team stays fresh? This could have a significant bearing on how things look in the standings.
