Rookie first-round pick Patrick Mahomes took the field following Alex Smith and Tyler Bray for the Kansas City Chiefs in his preseason debut on Friday.

The Texas Tech product would then go on to impress onlookers against the San Francisco 49ers, completing 7-of-9 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. That came after Bray himself failed to do anything of substance in limited action.

Now, it looks like Mahomes has surpassed Bray as Alex Smith’s primary backup in Kansas City. At the very least, he’s getting run with the squads second team in practice on Sunday.

Kansas City yielded a first-round pick in next year’s draft to move up from the 27th spot to 10th overall for Mahomes in April’s draft. It’s in this that we shouldn’t be too surprised by his ascension up the team’s depth chart.

Smith certainly remains the starter in Kansas City, but Mahomes’ performance thus far this summer in camp and the preseason lends credence to the idea that he will take over as the team’s starter in the not-so-distant future.
