Chicago Fire FC president Nelson Rodriguez resigned, the club announced Monday.
Rodriguez was named general manager in September 2015 by former owner Andrew Hauptman and added the duties of president in January 2018. In December 2019, new owner Joe Mansueto hired Georg Heitz as sporting director and lifted the GM job from Rodriguez.
“I began discussing my future with owner and chairman Joe Mansueto last month. At this transformational time for the organization, and after five years with the Fire, I’m ready for a change and I’m looking forward to taking on new challenges,” Rodríguez said in a news release.
“The Club is moving in an exciting direction and I wish the team, the staff and fans the very best of luck.”

In the past five seasons, the Fire have posted a 46-68-45 record and qualified for the postseason just once. That was 2017, when they finished in third place in the Eastern Conference and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
The Fire were 5-10-8 in 2020.
“For five years, Nelson has dedicated himself and given his everything to the club,” Mansueto said. “He has helped me tremendously over the course of our first year working together and I am grateful for that. We thank him for his loyal service to the Fire and we wish him all the best moving forward.”
