The Los Angeles Chargers opened camp in their new city on Saturday. Unfortunately, they did so without rookie first-round pick Mike Williams on the field.
Williams and cornerback Jason Verrett were both placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
Williams, the No. 7 overall pick in this year’s draft, suffered a herniated disc in his back during rookie minicamp back in the spring. Initial reports indicated that he might need season-ending surgery, but the Chargers seem confident he will be able to avoid said procedure.
Meanwhile, fellow former first-round pick and top cornerback Jason Verrett joins Williams on the PUP list. He missed all but four games last season with a torn ACL. He’s currently on the mend.
Bot players can be activated at any time between now and the end of the preseason.
