The Los Angeles Chargers announced Sunday that No. 7 overall pick, receiver Mike Williams, is expected to miss all of training camp.

Williams was placed on the PUP on Saturday with a back injury that some reported could need surgery.

The Clemson product denied those reports, calling them “false information,” and the Chargers are hopeful he won’t need surgery to repair his herniated disc.

But the fact remains that he’s still sketchy to make a big impact as a rookie. Even if Williams does get healthy enough to practice as the season begins, history tells us it’s difficult for rookie receivers to jump into the game and make a splash after missing significant time before their first NFL campaigns.

Williams has been out of commission since the team’s rookie minicamp, which means he’s been unable to practice at all with Philip Rivers and the first-team offense.

Last season, playing for the national champions, Williams caught 98 passes for 1,361 yards and 11 touchdowns.
