In the event of a move from San Diego to Los Angeles, the Chargers have already secured a lease for temporary team facilities in Costa Mesa, Calif.
This news comes by way of the Orange County Register‘s Scott M. Reid.
“The Chargers have agreed to lease part of a Costa Mesa office campus and are working with city officials to secure permits for practice fields at the location in anticipation of possibly relocating to Los Angeles, the Orange County Register has learned.”
The team confirmed to the Orange County Register that they will use a 3.2 acre plot to set up headquarters and training facilities if the team does move to Los Angeles. League owners recently voted to approve a move by the Chargers to L.A., where they would lease the Inglewood stadium currently being built for the Los Angeles Rams (more on that here).
Owner Dean Spanos must decide the team’s fate by January 15, 2017. The team has lost the support of its fans, with the last game against the Oakland Raiders acting as a stark reminder of that fact — a game that caused Philip Rivers to lament the team’s “ugly” and “sad, sad situation.”
The move by San Diego to Los Angeles appears to be all but done, apart from the official decision being announced.
Should Spanos surprise us all and stay in San Diego, then the Oakland Raiders would have the option to move to Los Angeles instead, though their move to Las Vegas remains a strong possibility.
