CF Montreal sign Bjorn Johnsen, Joaquin Torres

CF Montreal acquired striker Bjorn Johnsen and midfielder Joaquin Torres, adding experience and creativity to the roster ahead of the 2021 MLS season.

Johnsen, 29, signed a two-year contract Wednesday with an option for 2023. Montreal acquired him from the South Korean club Ulsan Hyundai using targeted allocation money.

“We are pleased with the acquisition of such a seasoned player, with extended experience in Europe and Asia,” Montreal sporting director Olivier Renard said in a release. “Bjorn is a big and very mobile striker. He has shown his capacity to score goals in all the clubs he has played for in the past, and with the Norwegian national team.”

Johnsen scored 11 goals in 31 games with Ulsan Hyundai, winning the AFC Champions League trophy in December and helping the club qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup.

He has also played professionally in Norway, Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria, Scotland and the Netherlands. Internationally, Johnsen has earned 16 caps with the Norwegian national team.

Torres, 24, was acquired on loan Thursday from Newell’s Old Boys in his native Argentina. The deal is for the 2021 season and includes an option to purchase the player.

“We are happy to welcome Joaquin among us,” Renard said. “He is a winger who can also play as an attacking midfielder, who will bring his creativity to our game. He likes to play vertically and pierce defensive lines through his one-on-one qualities.”

Torres was on loan at Volos FC in Greece for the 2019-20 season, tallying five goals in 24 games.
