The St. Louis Cardinals activated right-hander Adam Wainwright from the 15-day injured list to make his season debut in Saturday’s game against the visiting Detroit Tigers.

Wainwright, 41, has been sidelined by a groin injury sustained during a weight room workout ahead of Team USA’s World Baseball Classic championship game versus Japan in March.

He made three minor league rehab starts, going 1-0 with a 6.23 ERA in 13 innings for Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis.

Wainwright owns a 195-117 record with a 3.38 ERA in 457 career games (390 starts) with the Cardinals. The three-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove recipient previously announced that the 2023 season will be his last.

Also on Saturday, the Cardinals promoted catcher Tres Barrera from Memphis, sent right-hander Guillermo Zuniga to the Triple-A club and designated infielder Taylor Motter for assignment.

Barrera, 28, has four homers among his 12 hits and 15 RBIs in 47 at-bats this season.

Zuniga, 24, is 0-1 with three saves and a .540 ERA in nine relief appearances this season at Triple-A.

Motter, 33, is 4-for-20 with one RBI and eight strikeouts in eight games this season with the Cardinals.
