After a brief stay on the disabled list, the St. Louis Cardinals are ready to welcome back one of their most important players.
On Monday, the team activated starting pitcher Carlos Martinez off the 10-day disabled list after he missed more than a week with a right oblique strain.
The #STLCards have activated RHP Carlos Martínez from the 10-day DL and added newly-acquired LHP Chasen Shreve to the 25-man roster. The club placed RHP Luke Gregerson (right shoulder impingement) on the 10-day DL, retroactive to 7/26, and optioned LHP Tyler Webb to Memphis. pic.twitter.com/ARGl1sPtqu

The ace of the Cardinals’ rotation, Martinez returns to a 3.39 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 89 strikeouts in 95.2 innings this season. Before his injury, the 26-year-old had struggled with a 5.32 ERA over his last nine starts.
While St. Louis is likely out of the playoff picture, the second half should provide Martinez with an opportunity to build a stretch of success and potential momentum to work off of for next season.
In a corresponding move, St. Louis placed right-handed reliever Luke Gregerson on the 10-day disabled list with a right should impingement.
