Cam Newton cannot seem to stay healthy any more. The Carolina Panthers quarterback was held out of Tuesday’s practice after re-aggravating a foot injury he initially suffered in Week 3 of the preseason.
Newton re-aggravated the injury during the team’s Thursday night loss to Tampa Bay, general manager Marty Hurney confirmed Tuesday, per Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.
Tuesday’s practice was the team’s first since that loss, so it’s somewhat alarming that Newton is still unable to go after a five-day layoff. However, Hurney said that he isn’t concerned about it, and there is some good news to be had, per Rodrigue:
“Multiple team sources told The Athletic after the game that night that Newton received X-rays in the locker room that did not show any sign of a break, and that there was reason for ‘cautious’ optimism.”
Newton has struggled in the first two weeks of the season, completing just 56.2% of his passes for 572 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.
The Panthers will be on the road against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3.
