Bryce Petty’s Baylor Coach: “Jets Fans are in for a Big Treat”

The New York Jets waited until the fourth round before considering other quarterback options for the team. That selection consisted of Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty—a pick his former coach at Baylor appears to think was a brilliant decision. Speaking highly of his former quarterback with the New York Daily News, Art Briles shared this:

Jets fans are in for a big treat.

He’s a great player. Was Joe Montana in a system? Is Tom Brady in a system? Everybody’s in a system. It’s just about how you adapt. He’ll do well in whatever he’s asked to do. … RG3 won an NFC East title and was NFL Rookie of the Year. Then he got ‘systemized.’ So, I mean, let them play.

Boasting just a bit more about who Briles seems to think will be the answer at quarterback in New York, Briles described Petty’s football IQ.

To me, here’s his football IQ: 8,600 yards, 61 TDs, nine INTs, two Big 12 titles. That’s a pretty good IQ. It’s about how you produce on the field. Did you win? Are you a leader? Do you have the intangibles? Do you love the game? Yeah, he’s got all of those, but the most important one is that he wins. He’s a winner.

That’s one proud college coach, which is really not surprising when we analyze Petty’s Baylor stats. However, Jets’ fans may have to wait for Petty’s “treats” because recent reports indicate that the team does not have plans on starting the Baylor product this season. This means that fans will more likely be dealt the “tricks” of seasons past with either third-year starter Geno Smith or veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick under center in 2015.
