Bryce Harper, Phillies have chance for historic start against Max Scherzer, Nats

The Philadelphia Phillies are off to a roaring start with three wins in a row after landing Bryce Harper and others in free agency this offseason.

Now Harper and his new team are headed to the nation’s capital for a date with his old team, and starter Max Scherzer. And on Tuesday when these titans clash, Harper’s Phillies have a chance to match some history over 100 years in the making.

As pointed out by Jayson Stark of The Athletic, Philly’s 3-0 start is the team’s sixth in the past 50 years, and its first since 2011. The last time the Phillies went 4-0 to open a season, they went on to win the World Series, way back in 1915.

Obviously, with Scherzer on the mound for the Nationals, it’s not going to be easy to match that feat.

Yet the Phillies have an incredibly loaded lineup these days. In addition to landing Harper this past winter, they brought in Andrew McCutchen, and J.T. Realmuto, while landing pitcher David Robertson was also quite noteworthy.

Tuesday can’t come quick enough.
