The Atlanta Braves continue to use MLB’s current contract structure to the best of their abilities as they lock up some of the best young players in the game.
Earlier in the season, Atlanta signed star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. to what will be a bargain contract years down the road. While this has been a theme around MLB, the Braves took that to a new level on Thursday.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athleitc, Atlanta has locked up young second baseman Ozzie Albies on a contract extension.
The deals is said to be worth just $35 million over seven seasons.
An All-Star last season, the 22-year-old Albies has been scorching hot to start the 2019 campaign. He’s hitting a robust .364 with a .929 OPS in 11 games.
This move enables Atlanta to look even further down the road when it comes to extending young stars. Acuna and Albies are just two of many building blocks for this young team.
Much like the Acuna deal, this is going to be seen as a major bargain for the Braves moving forward. It eliminates Albies’ arbitration years — a period that would normally see him get dramatic raises every season.
