Atlanta Braves star Ozzie Albies undergoes foot surgery

Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies underwent surgery on his fractured left foot on Wednesday and will be out at least until the middle of August, with a return this season expected.

The Braves said the surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay, Wis.

Albies was injured during Monday’s victory over the Washington Nationals when he fell to the ground after a defensive swing. He was unable to run to first base on the ground ball and gingerly walked to the Atlanta dugout and exited the contest.

Albies, 25, was placed on the 60-day injured list on Tuesday.

The two-time All-Star is batting .244 with eight homers and 33 RBIs in 62 games this season.

Overall, Albies has a .270 career average with 98 homers and 344 RBIs in 622 games over six seasons.

Atlanta had won 13 consecutive games entering Wednesday night’s contest against the Nationals.
