Darrelle Revis might not be receiving a Christmas card from Tom Brady this year.
Speaking with Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Revis, when asked about Deflategate, didn’t try to defend his teammate from 2014 season, when both players won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots.
In fact, not only did Revis not defend Brady, but he pointed to past crimes and showed no sympathy for the punishment the future Hall of Fame quarterback is facing.
“Everybody’s blowing it up because it is Tom Brady,” Revis told the Daily News. “I understand that. But if [the NFL] feels he did the crime or he did something and they want to penalize them, then that’s that. (The Patriots) have a history of doing stuff. You can’t hide that. Tom was there when they did that stuff in the past.”
Revis jumped ship after one year in New England. He obviously doesn’t have a sense of loyalty to Brady or the Patriots to make comments like this.
And he takes it even further, elaborating on his point.
“New England’s been doing stuff in the past and getting in trouble,” Revis told Mehta. “When stuff repeatedly happens, then that’s it. I don’t know what else to tell you. Stuff repeatedly happened through the years. You got SpyGate, you got this and that and everything else. Obviously in those situations in the past, they had the evidence. So they did what they needed to do.”
Many have surmised that the reason the NFL came down so hard on the Patriots and Brady is because of past indiscretions. After the interview with Mehta, it’s clear Revis is in that camp as well.
It also is apparent that Revis doesn’t think it’s as big a deal as the media has made it—a common theme amongst pro athletes throughout this process.
Revis didn’t need to say what he said about Brady and the Patriots, calling them out on their sins. But he did.
