Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale pitched in a game for the first time in nearly two years Thursday, throwing three innings in his first rehab assignment in Florida.
Sale last pitched Aug. 13, 2019, before being shut down with elbow inflammation. Sale eventually underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2020, missing the entire season.
Pitching for the rookie-level Florida Complex League Red Sox on Thursday, Sale allowed no runs on four hits, with five strikeouts and no walks against the FCL Orioles. He was only expected to throw two innings.
A seven-time All-Star, Sale has a 109-73 record and a 3.03 ERA over nine major league seasons.
Should all continue trending toward a return, Sale, 32, could be back in the rotation by August.
Sale’s next rehab start will likely be next week.
