Toronto Blue Jays All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to his right knee injury.

Bichette is dealing with patellar tendinitis, stemming from an injury that occurred during Monday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Bichette, 25, leads the American League in batting average (.321). He has 17 home runs and 59 RBIs and was named an All-Star for the second time of his career.

Paul DeJong, who was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, was added to the active roster Wednesday and is expected to receive most of the action at shortstop.

“DeJong is an interesting fit for us even without the injury,” Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins told reporters after Tuesday’s trade. “He’s hit left-handers relatively well. He’s a very good defender that complements our organizational depth. He has great experiences and I think it heightened the need with Bo’s injury.”

DeJong, who turned 30 on Wednesday, is batting .233 with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs in 81 games this season. The one-time All-Star is a career .233 hitter with 115 HRs, all with the Cardinals.

Toronto also recalled Thomas Hatch from Triple-A Buffalo and optioned fellow right-hander Nate Pearson to the same affiliate.

Hatch, 28, had a 2.25 ERA in five appearances for the Blue Jays earlier this season.

Pearson, 26, was 5-2 with a 5.31 ERA in 32 games for Toronto.
