WATCH: Blue Jays burn Yankees with unusual double play

While they’re nice for the team and often pretty, 6-4-3 double plays are rarely notable. The Toronto Blue Jays broke that rule of thumb on Tuesday.

With one out and a runner on second, New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez smoked a one-hopper to Freddy Galvis. The Toronto shortstop fielded it clean, but didn’t fire to first. Instead, he tossed it to second, catching runner DJ LeMahieu a little too far off the bag in the process. Second baseman Eric Sogard handled it from there.

Traditionally, non-force settings don’t lend themselves to a lot of double plays, especially on balls that aren’t caught in the air.

Sometimes, though, traditions are meant to be broken.
