There’s certainly going to be some logistical concerns as Major League Baseball prepares to start its truncated 2020 season in less than a month.
Chief among them is travel. How are potential restrictions going to impact the schedule? As for the Blue Jays in Toronto, that’s magnified by the United States-Canada border remaining closed for non-essential travel during the ongoing pandemic.
Blue Jays ask Canada to be able to play home games in Toronto
There’s a lot of issues with this. First off, those entering Canada was forced to quarantine for 14 days due to the global pandemic. That would obviously impact teams from the United States traveling to Canada to take on the Blue Jays. It would also impact the Blue Jays once they return home from a road trip.
Multiple Blue Jays players tested positive for COVID-19 in Florida
This is yet another major problem. While Canada has done well to flatten the COVID-19 curve, major hot spots remain in the United States. Florida is right now among the epicenters of the virus in the world. It is joined by both Texas and California, two states with multiple MLB teams. Adding to this is the fact that multiple Blue Jays players recently tested positive for the virus.
If the Canadian government denies the Blue Jays’ request, the team will likely end up playing in either Western New York or Florida. Again, it’s all about the pandemic and what we see over the next several weeks.
For now, it seems highly unlikely that the Blue Jays will be able to play their home games in Toronto.
