Tom Coughlin: Blake Bortles is the Jaguars’ QB ‘right now’

Blake Bortles NFL Week 3

After having a horrific 2018 season, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles’ job could be in jeopardy. But for now, he is the team’s quarterback.

Jaguars executive vice president Tom Coughlin had this to say when asked about Bortles’ future:

“Blake is the quarterback with the Jacksonville Jaguars right now,” Coughlin responded, via ESPN 690 AM (h/t Kevin Patra of NFL.com).”

Obviously the words “right now” should have Bortles shaking in his cleats.

Bortles is signed through the 2020 season with Jacksonville after the team extended his contract last year. But instead of delivering the goods, Bortles crashed and burned, got benched and managed only 13 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions in 2018. As a result of his poor play, Bortles managed only three wins last year.

Moving forward, his salary cap hit for 2019 amounts to $20.8 million.

It is safe to say the Jaguars really should explore what other options there are besides Bortles at quarterback for the upcoming season.

Bortles even joked that he tricked the team into re-signing him last spring. Now, the joke may be on him.
