The news surrounding Sammy Watkins and his ongoing foot problem continues to get worse it seems by the passing week.
Friday, speaking with reporters, Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan issued an ominous response to the question of whether or not Watkins’ injury would keep him out for an extended period of time.
“I mean, I don’t know if fear’s the right word, but major concern,” Ryan said.
Ryan elaborated on where Watkins is now and how the team views his injury.
“If we thought he could go, obviously we’d play him, regardless of if he practiced or not,” Ryan said. “But right now, we don’t feel good enough, he doesn’t feel good enough to play. … Obviously, we all want him playing because of the kind of talent he is. And if it’s best that he’s not out there, then he won’t be out there.”
Watkins underwent offseason surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot. He downplayed the severity of the injury both when it happened and throughout the summer.
However, he did end up missing a portion of training camp, and the injury has carried over into the season. He caught six passes for just 63 yards in his first two games and could not suit up for the team’s Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals.
The most talented receiver on Buffalo’s offense, Watkins will be missed if he is not available for an extended period of time. During his first two seasons in the league, the receiver caught 125 passes for 2,029 yards and 11 touchdowns.
