When the Buffalo Bills open the 2019 season, LeSean McCoy will be the running back. That’s the hope of coach Sean McDermott, anyway.
McDermott talked about the team and McCoy. While he did acknowledge that the season hasn’t gone smoothly for either the Bills or McCoy, he was excited to have McCoy going forward.
“I’m really excited about where we’re going and LeSean being a part of that,” he said, per Sal Capaccio of WGR 550 Sports Radio. “I know this year wasn’t what he had hoped it would be. The biggest thing I want to see is ‘what are we going to do to get it back to where it needs be?’ I think he’s committed to that cause and so are we.”
By any measure, 2018 has been the worst season of McCoy’s career. In 13 games, he’s rushed for only 488 yards on 151 carries for an average of 3.2 yards per attempt. He’s also scored only two touchdowns.
McCoy didn’t start in Week 16’s loss to the New England Patriots as punishment stemming from an issue between he and McDermott. Although at this point, that does seem to be water under the bridge.
Buffalo is also 5-10 and will not return to the playoffs after breaking a near two-decade drought in 2017. If the Bills are going to get back on track, getting McCoy back to his peak performance will be integral.
