Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley made quite the statement against the game of football as it relates to player safety.
Speaking on WGR Tuesday morning, Whaley said football is “a violent game that I personally don’t think humans are supposed to play,” per Tyler Dunne of The Buffalo News.
Many people have expressed similar sentiments about the game of football, especially at the higher levels in which the collisions are imminently more severe. However, this would be the first time we’ve heard an NFL general manager make such a statement.
The irony is thick and rich here.
Whaley is knee deep in it and is essentially personally profiting from the sport he seems to be having issues condoning. He signed a multi-year contract extension with the Bills less than six months ago, though the terms of the deal were not disclosed. But he’s certainly making millions of dollars on the deal.
He oversees a roster than will be set at 90 players by the time training camp rolls around and will watch many of those players sacrifice their bodies and sustain injuries, only to be cut by him later as the season draws near.
It is a brutal business, and the NFL is a violent game. Nobody will deny those facts. However, if Doug Whaley is truly against human beings playing the game of football, he shouldn’t be in a position of power in the NFL.
