Report: Bills fire OC Greg Roman

The Buffalo Bills have reportedly fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman after just two games this season.

In Roman’s stead will be Anthony Lynn, who is also an assistant head coach.

The Bills hired Roman away from the San Francisco 49ers last summer after Doug Marrone opted out of his contract.

Roman is known for using a plethora of formations throughout a single game. He likes to run the same or similar plays out of those different formations as a means to confuse opposing defenses.

He engineered some successful offensive attacks during his time with the 49ers as Jim Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator, helping both Colin Kaepernick and Alex Smith have productive seasons. But he is also known for trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, which was evidenced during Kaepernick’s decline.

The Bill started this season 0-2 after losing an away game to the Baltimore Ravens and a home game on Thursday Night Football to the New York Jets.

Buffalo’s offense was particularly anemic in Week 1, totaling 160 yards and 11 first downs.

Against New York, the Bills were better, totaling 393 yards, but 155 of Tyrod Taylor’s 297 passing yards came on two long plays. Otherwise, the offense was corralled most of the night.

Obviously, something had to happen after the Bills’ first two games.

The general sentiment at this point has to be that Rex Ryan and his brother Rob are the next on the chopping block if something doesn’t happen soon. Buffalo’s defense was perhaps worse than its offense in Week 2, allowing the Jets to move the ball and score at will.

At this point, it might just be time to go ahead and let Ryan go. He was a bad hire to begin with, and things aren’t likely to improve going forward.

Still, it seems the Bills are prepared to live and die based on his leadership going forward this year.
