Not only do members of the NFL media believe that Bill Belichick is a good fit for the Washington Commanders but some around the league see it as a “logical” option if his time in New England ends this year as expected.

This has been by far the worst season in the long and storied history Bill Belichick has created with the New England Patriots. The team is 3-11heading into Week 16 and could finish with a worse record than the five-win group he had in his first season with the franchise in 2000.

The rumblings about Belichick’s job being in danger began last season and have only intensified in 2023. However, a recent report suggested the Pats Week 10 loss to the Colts was a massive tipping point for owner Robert Kraft, and the defeat made him decide that this would be the six-time Super Bowl winner’s final season in New England.

When Belichick’s seat started to heat up midway through the season, speculation quickly began that the Commanders might be his next employer since they are expected to make a head coach switch as well after the season.

On Monday, The Athletic NFL reporter Mike Sando wrote about why some inside the league also expect Belichick to end up in Washington next year.

  • Bill Belichick record (Career): 301-163, 6 Super Bowl titles

“Quite a few people in the NFL see Washington as a logical destination for Belichick as the organization restores its standing following the Daniel Snyder ownership error.

‘”Who would give him this massive contract?’ one coach asked. ‘Who would give him massive control? It would be a new owner who had a lot of money. Bill would show these guys how to be an owner. He would give these owners some respect in the ownership circle.'”

One holdup in a potential trade or signing of Belichick is that Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris is reportedly thinking about adding an analytics-driven president of football operations. And analytics is not at all the NFL legend’s preferred way of approaching the game.
