All signs have been pointing to the Atlanta Falcons being Bill Belichick’s next stop in his head coaching career, and this weekend the two sides will take a huge step closer to getting a deal done very soon.

Last week, a unique piece of NFL history was made when iconic New England Patriots head Bill Belichick ended his legendary 24-year run with the franchise. And the organization did not wait long to replace the 71-year-old when they made long-time heir-apparent Jerod Mayo the next head coach. However, Belichick’s future is still undecided.

Almost immediately after it was revealed that Belichick’s days in New England were over, various reports pointed to the Atlanta Falcons being a heavy favorite to pursue the six-time Super Bowl champion. The organization fired head coach Arthur Smith after the season came to a close and owner Arthur Blank has tried to land legendary NFL head coaches in the past to no avail.

Well, it is looking more and more likely that the third time will be the charm when it comes to Blank landing big-ticket coaches.

Earlier this week, the iconic coach met with the Falcons for an introductory interview with the team. On Thursday, NFL Media league insider Ian Rapoport reported that during that first meeting, Belichick met “1-on-1” with Blank and that the organization is now set to have a second interview with him this weekend.

CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones also claimed that the coach and owner “met for hours” during their meeting on Monday.

Belichick having only met with the Falcons, and being already set to have a second interview with them is a strong indication that the Atlanta Falcons are his preferred destination. The big question now is if the organization is willing to meet the $20 million per season asking price he is reportedly looking for or if they will give him the similar control he had over the Patriots’ roster decisions.
