BIG3 team hires Nancy Lieberman as head coach

Nancy Lieberman is set to become the first female head coach in a men’s professional sports league. The former WNBA player will replace Clyde Drexler, now the league commissioner, as the coach of the Power.

The league officially announced the news Wednesday.

“We have added an absolutely tremendous coach in Nancy Lieberman,” BIG3 chairwoman Amy Trask said in a release. “Not a tremendous female coach, a tremendous coach, period.”

Lieberman, 59, was a second-round pick of the Phoenix Mercury in 1997. She has previously served as the head coach for the WNBA’s Detroit Shock and D-League’s Texas Legends, as well as an assistant for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.

As a player, she helped the United States win a silver medal at the 1976 Winter Games. She is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
