Big 12 commissioner: Baylor scandal hasn’t made them ‘any less popular’

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby is obviously aware of the ongoing sexual assault scandal going on at Baylor University which has led to a complete overhaul at the university. His take on the scandal, however, seems a bit out of place.

Well, we can all be thankful for that. When an ugly sexual assault happens at a university, the popularity of the conference that that school plays in is obviously an important concern, right?

Bowlsby simply didn’t need to say this at all.

The situation at Baylor is a mess. The athletic director and head football coach have been fired while the president has been reassigned. The reality is that, given the severity of what went wrong for so long, all of those moves were an absolute necessity. It could actually be argued that the punishments were not strong enough.

The popularity of the Big 12 conference is so far down the totem pole of what really matters here that it’s not even funny. Really, it’s so far down the list that it’s just not worth mentioning.

If the conference is suffering a few months from now, it’s something that the people within the Big 12 office can talk about in attempts to make things better. But even if that happens, it’s nothing that should ever find its way into a press conference.

Bowlsby even mentioning this was just a gigantic, insensitive swing and a miss.
