It became readily apparent following the acquisition of Nick Foles that the Chicago Bears did not plan on committing to former No. 2 overall pick Mitchell Trubisky over the long term.

That’s now come to fruition. Facing a deadline to either pick up or decline the fifth-year option on the quarterback’s rookie deal, Chicago has decided on the latter. Trubisky will now become a free agent following the 2020 season.

Despite showing public support for Trubisky, the Bears have made it clear that there’s going to be a quarterback competition between the former North Carolina standout and Foles. At this point, Foles seems to have the upper-hand.

Trubisky, 25, is coming off a horrible 2019 campaign that saw him throw 17 touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions while averaging just 209 passing yards per game.

If Chicago would have picked up the 2021 option on Trubisky’s deal, it would have cost the team an estimated $24.84 million against the cap. That’s too rich for a player of his ilk.
