With rumors swirling that the New York Giants could take JJ McCarthy with the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, a team legend who hosts a popular afternoon radio show in New York City absolutely hates the idea.

The Giants are in a very tough spot in Round 1 of this month’s NFL draft. Usually having the sixth pick is a great position to be in. The G-Men are reportedly interested in taking a signal-caller with their first pick and there are quite a few talented prospects at the position in this year’s class.

Unfortunately for New York, there are quite a few QB-needy teams ahead of them in round one who could scoop up the three players many see as the cream of the QB crop in 2024. That could mean that Michigan QB JJ McCarthy will be available when the Giants are on the clock at No. 6.

The man who helped lead the Wolverines to a National Championship in January has surprisingly flown up draft boards over the last month and a half after being seen as a second or even third-tier QB prospect in the early stages of the pre-draft process.

New York Giants great Tiki Barber believes the reason why he did not get a high NFL grade months ago is because McCarthy did not show NFL skills in college and the organization needs to avoid drafting him at all costs.

“The JJ McCarthy thing, I’m tired of hearing it. Stop with the JJ McCarthy thing,” Barber said on a Friday edition of the WFAN 660 radio show he co-hosts on weekdays. “His film doesn’t say he’s a first-round quarterback. His film doesn’t say I need to get rid of all my assets and go draft this guy, because a lot of what he does doesn’t translate. The scheme that he ran at Michigan didn’t highlight the things that you need to do.

“Second, third level reads and multiple combo routes that you that you have to get correct. He didn’t do any of that stuff,” he added. “They were run-based and he thrived in it because he was good at what Jim Harbaugh asked him to do … all of a sudden he’s a top-four quarterback? I don’t buy it.”

Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels — the player the Giants reportedly want most — are all expected to be off the board in the first three picks.
