Banned Sergio Aguero changes the Manchester derby

Manchester City is playing some great football under new coach Pep Guardiola. This is made all the more exciting by the potential rekindling of the La Liga rivalry between Guardiola (Barcelona), and Mourinho (Real Madrid) that looms on September 10th at Old Trafford.

These Manchester clubs have to contend for the league title this season. The prospect of seeing these teams go at it, with all their stars, would have not just been a key indicator of future potential but the likeliest way that vicious and theatrical rivalry between managers would be ignited.

Without Sergio Aguero, who has been banned for 3-matches after elbowing West Ham United defender Winston Reid in the throat, the game looks like an inevitable draw. Aguero is a game changer, and putting Mourinho on the defensive is the best way to create an explosive build-up and conclusion to that game.

With all that said, the FA had no real choice in banning Aguero. It was the right decision for a deliberate swing of the elbow. We’ll have to wait until the 25th of February for round two of the Manchester derby, but lets hope the rivalry takes off before then.
