One of the things high-profile athletes have the privilege of doing is being a source of inspiration and hope for young children who suffer from serious illnesses. A group that helps facilitate these special encounters — Special Spectators — passed along some very sad news on Friday. One of the girls in their program who had been a huge Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma Sooners fan, Mackenzie, tragically passed away on Thursday.

Mayfield, who is the prohibitive favorite to win the 2017 Heisman Trophy in New York this Saturday, wasted little time responding and offering his condolences to Mackenzie’s family. He also dedicated the final games of his collegiate career to her, noting her “unbelievable heart and so much courage.”

Mackenzie had been “THRILLED” to see Mayfield in the locker room recently.

When Mackenzie’s father, Jayson Asher, got wind of this, he also tweeted a message saying, “As the proud father of Mackenzie I can tell you that was one of the best moments of her life. We will always cherish this day and these memories,” referring to Mackenzie’s day meeting Mayfield in the locker room.

Mayfield is one of the most passionate, emotional players we’ve seen in college football in a long time. No doubt, he’ll be holding Mackenzie in his heart in a big way as he and the Sooners attempt to win the national championship in the College Football Playoff, starting in the Rose Bowl when they take on Georgia on Jan. 1.
