ATP roundup: Top-seed Carlos Alcaraz advances in Beijing

Carlos Alcaraz continued his dominant 2023 season, defeating Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals of the China Open in Beijing.

In the process, the top-seeded Alcaraz became the first player to 60 tour-level wins this year. He moved to 16-1 at ATP 500 events, which included titles at Barcelona and the Queen’s Club in London.

The Spaniard cruised to victory by breaking Musetti’s serve four times and winning points on 70 percent of his first serves.

In the quarterfinals, Alcaraz will take on eighth-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway, who came back to defeat Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7).

The third seed, Holger Dune of Denmark, was upset by Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 7-5. Next up for Dimitrov is Italy’s Jannik Sinner, the sixth seed, who eliminated Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan 6-2, 6-0.

Astana Open

Fifth-seeded Sebastian Korda reached the semifinals in Kazakhstan by knocking off top seed Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

He struck 12 aces on his way to his fifth tour semifinal of 2023. It was his first-ever meeting against Griekspoor of the Netherlands.

Next up for Korda is Hamad Medjedovic of Serbia. The 20-year-old eliminated fourth-seeded Czech Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semifinals.

The other semifinal will feature Sebastian Ofner against sixth-seeded Adrian Mannarino of France, who defeated Jurji Rodionov of Austria 6-1, 7-6 (6). Ofner beat fellow Austrian Dominic Thiem 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
