ATP roundup: Taylor Fritz wins in Atlanta for sixth career victory

Top-seeded Taylor Fritz hammered 16 aces on Sunday while posting a 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4 victory over Aleksandar Vukic to win the Atlanta Open title.

Fritz had 31 winners against 10 unforced errors while beating the Australian in two hours, 16 minutes. It is Fritz’s second ATP title of the season and sixth of his career.

Vukic had 41 winners — including 14 aces — while competing in his first ATP final. The former University of Illinois player saved seven of nine break points.

Hamburg European Open

Fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev defeated Serbian Laslo Djere 7-5, 6-3 to become the second German since 1968 to win the title in Hamburg.

Zverev, who was born in Hamburg, is the first homeland product to become the event champion since Michael Stich in 1993. It his first ATP crown since 2021 and 20th overall.

Zverev converted 77.3 percent (34 of 44) of his first-serve points. Djere converted 21 of 32 (65.6 percent).

Alexei Popyrin picked up his second career title by knocking off sixth-seeded Stan Wawrinka 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 in the final in Umag.

Popyrin sustained a cramp in his right quadricep during the fourth game of the final set and played through it to knock off the veteran Wawrinka of Switzerland.

The Australian lost the first-set tiebreaker before rallying to win in two hours, 36 minutes.
